Dr. Carmen de Mattos is an Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Education at the Faculty of Education, State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). She holds a PhD in Education, Culture and Society from the University of Pennsylvania and a post-doctorate in Sociology of Education from the University of Paris V, Sorbonne. Having started her career as an elementary school teacher and head teacher, during the last 25 years Dr. Carmen de Mattos taught for Mackenzie University in São Paulo, for the Fluminense Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFF) and Federal University of the Northern of Rio de Janeiro (UENF) before enrolling at UERJ. She has conducted research on failure school of children from working class adopting qualitative methods such as ethnography. Her studies supported the development of new practices for the education of children in juvenile delinquent halls, street children and children in state schools. Currently, Dr. Carmen de Mattos supervises master and PhD students from the Graduate Programme of Education at UERJ and teaches courses on research methodology, Brazilian education and technology in education. In 2005, she was also granted the Pro-scientist Scholarship from the Rio de Janeiro State Government, which will supported the development of her current investigation entitled ‘Ethnographic images of educational exclusion: students perspectives on school failure’.
